The Science Hub had an extremely busy Science Week with a whole host of activities taking place both in and out of the Learning Hub!
Check out last weeks blog post for the lowdown of what went on : http://www.learninghub.ie/science-week-at-the-learning-hub/
This post is all about our fantastic industry visit to Vistakon. Located in Limerick, Vistakon is one of the largest contact lens manufacturers in the world.
The first interesting thing we noticed about the site is the giant wind turbine located just down the road from the entrance…..
The kids were immediately drawn in and the questions like “I wonder if this powers the whole plant?” began to flow.
We were then escorted into the building where each of the children was given their own security pass (and began to act like they were members of the FBI immediately!!).
We were then brought up to one of the board rooms where Michael and Tom led the children through a brief Health & Safety talk after which we put on our safety gear and were brought out onto the production floor.
The kids learned about all of the different machines used on the production lines and got to see a lens being made from start to finish.
Next we were brought into the testing labs and the kids got the chance to carry out some experiments used to determine whether or not the lenses were fit for use by customers. They learned a lot during the tour and it was clear that they were really enjoying themselves!
Finally we were led back up to the board room where we played a game of Vistakon themed “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”.
Thanks to all the team in Vistakon for having us! It was such a fun and educational afternoon!
