Hi, my name is Ayesha and I am a student from Mary Immaculate College studying English and Media. I have been on placement at the Learning Hub since the beginning of September 2015. It has been a fantastic experience! One of the things I loved the most about the Learning Hub is that no day is the same as the last, nor is any class. One day I got to help out with music classes. This involved singing and song writing with the children. The next day I helped a group of primary school children to write a story collectively as a group and the next day you could be out at an event such as the ITLG Young Innovators Competition helping out as a mentor. This meant that my placement never got boring or repetitive.
The massive variety of children that I was given the opportunity to work alongside in lots of different environments was so much fun and hugely rewarding. It also gave me a much better understanding of Limerick as a whole, rather than just as a city full of students. All the variety also helped me to become more adaptable, independent, but most of all it taught me how to work effectively as part of a team.
A couple of big highlights for me were taking part in designing and acting in a Haunted House for the children to come and visit and walking through the streets of Limerick in the St. Patrick’s Parade, with an amazing float and the kids all kitted out in costumes and face paints. The Hub is unique in the sense that the children have a very active role in designing and carrying out projects. Each child is given an opportunity to put forward at least one idea for a project and assuming it is feasible, the Hub will do everything in it’s power to help make their idea a reality. This allows the children to have a sense of ownership over the project.
Throughout my placement I have had the pleasure of meeting many unique people from across Ireland that are studying or working in and around Limerick. From my placement I hoped to gain a better understanding of what profession I might be interested in and working in the Hub has allowed me to further my experience in English teaching, music recording and editing, film recording and editing and teaching in a school like setting.
Personally I will never forget how good it felt to see hundreds of children leave the Learning Hub with a smile on their faces and on top of that the long-term staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly throughout my time here. I will never forget the experiences I had or the people I worked with at the Learning Hub.
