On Tuesday in our Positive Life Skills Class, we asked the Transition Years from Thomond Community College to anonymously write down the things that they considered awesome in their lives – the everyday nice stuff that makes life that little bit more bearable. We collected the notes in a box and shared some with the class at the end of the workshop, leaving everyone finishing the school day on a high note.
The exercise was based on a fantastic talk by Neil Pasricha called The 3 A’s of Awesome, which is one of our favourite TED talks here at The Hub. It’s about finding tiny little nuggets of joy or good luck as you go about your day, and appreciating them, being present in the moment and being aware that they do happen. You don’t need money or prestige or a pampered privileged life to have some little awesome things in your life. One could be your toddler’s face lighting up when they see you coming home after being out all day, or getting that prime free parking spot in town on a Sunday afternoon without having to use a car park. It could be the takeaway you ordered arriving in less time than you’d been told, or the €5 note in the back pocket of your jeans you found just before they went in the wash. Or, one of my personal favourites – getting to the counter in a store to pay for that top you decided to treat yourself to, only to find it’s actually on sale for half price but hadn’t been marked!
Here’s the slideshow collection of the things that make life for our TY students that little bit happier and help to inject a little more ‘Awesome’ into their everyday lives! Just hover over each pic to read the description, or click on the Youtube vid in the slideshow to watch The 3 A’s of Awesome. Enjoy!
